Deadliest Catch Days of Reckoning
Jul 22nd, 2009 by admin
As Opilio season draws closer to an end the crews of the crab fleets are getting ready to battle a fierce Artic storm. On board the Wizard, Captain Keith is running out of time as he needs to catch the rest of his quota and meet a rapidly approaching deadline. They also need to contend with the four inches of ice that has accumulated on the pot stack only adding to the already dangerous weight. As the seas begin to build the crew is left scrambling as they try to dump as many pots off the deck as possible to safely battle the storm. Fast forward a bit (Must be trying to save the storm itself for the finale) and the Wizard is safe at harbor unloading their catch. Besides removing the crab it’s also time to remove the troubled greenhorn Josh, who undoubtedly no one aboard the boat will miss.
Meanwhile the Northwestern is steaming back to the crab grounds after dropping off Jake Anderson so he can return home to be with his family after hearing the news of the death of his sister. Now the crew will have to work the deck a man down, with time running our and the weather turning worse. After some rest on the trip back out they’ll have to be ready to work harder than ever. Of course on one such rest, Captain Sig moves the clocks ahead to let the crew believe he let them sleep in a while longer. He then is nice enough to give them the option to work throughout the night or risk their lives by working the next morning in thirty plus foot seas, which doesn’t take the crew long to decide to continue their marathon.
Great crabbing continues on the Time Bandit (Although remember their quota is much lower which explains why they are not ever near the top in the crab count standings). Captain Andy and his team are rushing to get through the last eighty pots to be able to get back and offload and be done with this year’s season. In order to make sure his tanks are full, after missing out on part of his quota on a previous trip, he asks the crew to “stick” the tanks. This is a quick way of measuring how far the crab are from the top of the tank to see just how much room is left. His repeated requests fall on deaf ears though, so Captain Jonathan takes matters into his own hands and hits the deck to do the task himself. While on deck he gets into it with deckhand Mike, who wisely states he can’t obey an order he can’t hear. This enrages Jonathan and the whole thing quickly escalates. Soon Jonathan will have to choose if Mike or Russell will be the crew member who doesn’t return and this certainly doesn’t help out Mike’s cause.
In the end Jonathan decides that Mike has earned another trip aboard the Time Bandit and long time friend Russell is let go. It’s an emotional decision, based on business that will undoubtedly take it’s toll on the long term friendship. However, knowing the Wizard is a man short having lost the greenhorn, Captain Jonathan talks to Keith about hiring Russell. After a sit down with the crew of the Wizard that Captain gets no objections to hiring the long time Time Bandit and Russell is welcome aboard with only a chance to prove himself.
I truely enjoy watching Deadliest Catch! Some times I have beautiful dreams about their type of adventures.
Thank You for having this show!!!

Love you guys and the show very much !!! I always hate for the season to end but relieved to know that you are safe on land.
Just can’t wait till you are back “On The Crab”.
For being such tough guys and doing one of the deadliest jobs on the planet……you all have such BIG hearts !
Nikki
Love the first day of king crab. Always happy to see the guys again and miss the ones that haven’t returned on camera. Hate the last day of Opilio now it’s over, but thank God for reruns. They have become a part of our lives that I sure surprises them as much as us who love them. Can’t wait till next season when they’ll be back.
Love you guys!!!
Really dissapointed to see the tongue lashing Jonathan gave Mike for not sticking the tanks – totally uncalled for, and to think I just purchased gear from their web site that I will not wear now. If these guys where as tough as they claim to be, Mike would have had Jonathan tasting that pickin’ hook (lol) and telling him what he can do with his deck job, I am sure any boat would be grateful to have Mike on their vessel. Yes, Time bandit is overstaffed……in the captains quarters, at least when Johhny is capt. Andy is deck boss, what does John bring to the boat during opie season other than short tempered attitude, maybe this can be explained on a future episode. Just my two cents.
Good luck to all and continued success on all your fishing trips, and wishing you all safe returns.

Really disappointed in last nights show. I gotta say the entire Russel thing stinks. The airing of the same shot of him going in the sauna was obvious. In one of them you can see someone else is in there too. This guy, by Johnathan’s admission possibly saved Johnathan’s life, at the very least he was thinking about John being missing when nobody else was. If a guy works for me for that long and I am unhappy with him, you talk to him and give him a chance to buck up. He deserves that atleast for his loyalty. Seems loyalty has a price. Russell has no quota but JJ does. The price of saving a life? I guess we would need to know JJ’s quota. The entire Mike episode was ridiculous. You never belittle an employee in front of his peers. I think the most disturbing scene ws Scotty smirking as Russell left. What happened to Andy and Johnathan? I guess this all goes without saying after reading other blogs. These guys are getting blasted. You can run your ship the way you want, but remember that the world is watching. You make a ton off the show so that is the price you pay. I wonder if this is why Johnathan has seemed a bit subdued in the ATC shows. He is smart enough to know this was coming. Shame on Discovery for setting up the whole thing. Making Russ look bad and a year ago Andy was talking about how Russ does the same job in 3 steps it takes most crew members 5 to do. No loyalty among Pirates is what they say. Johnathan is called the pirate. And the “It has changed our relationship already” line/ PLease you just screwed your longest employeed friend. Are you shocked?
Rewatching the show of the recent episode. Boy, those Time Bandit guys are messy (that’s the best term to use that’s not offensive). You never call a person a dumbf*&k, especially knowing that it’ll be shown to millions of people. The fact that he looked at the camera after throwing the speaker (don’t know what it’s called), it’s like he was trying to prove that ‘I’m the boss and if I tell you to jump, you ask how high’. Why didn’t the other crew members do what Andy was asking, it’s not like they didn’t hear it. Why didn’t Neal-he was just sitting there, it looked like the deckhands were busy-at least Mike and Russel did. If I was Mike, I would have let him fire me and gave Jonathan a piece of my mind. With his experience, I don’t see him having a hard time finding another boat. As for Russell, I hope he makes better money in the Wizard. There are too many Captains in the Time Bandit for comfort. I wish they could exchange another boat like the Rollo/North American to replace the Time Bandit. The Rollo was fun to watch, they were crazy but that’s what made them fun. Fame has corrupted the Time Bandit. It’s time for a new boat to replace them.
I love watching this show so much that I think I am obsessed already. I dont like watching the episode where Mike is being shout at. It was so demeaning and very uncalled for – the Time Bandit is my least favorite boat for both captains are mean and rude to their employees. I really hope that the producers of this show will find a replacement for I am so tired of them.
Last Tuesday’s episode repeated on Thursday was heartbreaking for me. I have been a fan of the Time Bandit but in love with Phil of Cornelia Marie. I definitely felt that Russell was shortchanged. If you knew you were going to reduce your staff I would have advised every one at the initiation of the trip. Each crew member would have an opportunity to shine to keep their job – not be ambushed in front of a camera. That was pitiful treatment of Russell who worked very hard and was apparently very loyal. As an afterthought the call to Keith of the Wizard seemed disingenuous. Russell’s reputation proceeded him — why the treatment by Keith – let’s see if you are a fit. What an introduction to your new job (when you are clearly a veteran). It is time for Deadliest Catch to rotate some of their “STARS” off the big screen and expose the die hard fans to new faces and new attitudes. The show will last longer and be appreciated more. Cocky is what we are being fed now and we deserve more as viewers.
